Chula Vista Cool Pavements Study

This study, conducted by Nichols Consulting Engineers, examines the benefits, limitations, and local applications of cool pavements in Chula Vista. The authors found that white cement pavement, whitetopping using concrete with light-colored fly ash, resin-based pavements, and Emerald Cities coating technology would have the greatest impact on reducing the urban heat island effect. In contrast, other technologies, such as pervious concrete and Grasspave, have lower solar reflectance but can cool surfaces through evapotranspiration and also improve stormwater management.
