Honolulu Exceptional Tree Ordinance

Honolulu prohibits the removal or destruction of trees designated as “exceptional” without prior City Council approval. Any alteration to an exceptional tree’s shape or branches requires a permit from the Department of Parks and Recreation, which is also responsible for setting the permit criteria under HRS Chapter 91. Violations can result in fines up to $1,000.
