The Minnesota Urban Forest Promotion and Development Statute requires the University of Minnesota and the commissioner of agriculture research the tree varieties most suitable for growth in the state and the proper placement of trees in different contexts to maximize energy saving. U of M and the commissioner must work with tree suppliers to assure trees are available for planting. The commissioner must match the needs of municipalities with stocks of trees. Large cities must require developers to use properly placed trees in new development.
