North Las Vegas Shading Sustainability Options

The purpose of the North Las Vegas Code of Ordinances § 17.24.140 is to promote sustainable development. Developments are recommended to follow certain sustainable site and building design options to reduce the heat island effect and enhance walkability for pedestrians.

Design features related to shade include:
1. At least 50 percent of all off-street parking spaces shall be located under cover. Cover may be provided by a building, a deck, or a shade structure, or parking may be underground. Any cover, roof, or shade used for this requirement must have a minimum Solar Reflectance Index of 29, with points awarded.
2. Shaded sidewalks shall be provided along 100 percent of all building façades adjacent to or facing streets, drive aisles, outdoor gathering spaces, and parking areas, with points awarded. Base shading requirements are in Section 17.24.140.D, Solar Shading and Reflectance, with points awarded.
3. Shaded sidewalks shall be provided along all streets interior to a development, with points awarded.
4. Adding a shelter to a transit stop, with points awarded.
