North Myrtle Beach Parking Zoning Acknowledging Heat Islands and Requiring Vegetation

The city’s zoning ordinance notes that “[p]arking lot landscaping is an important element in reducing the heat island effect, controlling water runoff, and improving the aesthetics of a site.” Section 23-129.5(III)(5). It requires that developments of “regional significance”—which are greater than 75,000 square feet—have vegetated areas in parking lots. Section 23-129.5(III)(5)-(6). The ordinance also requires that parking areas in these developments of regional significance incorporate “low impact development features” that are “intended to mimic the natural hydrological cycle.” Section 23-129.5(III)(6).
