NYC Residential Tree Planting Requirements

This New York City Zoning regulation requires one street tree for every 25 feet of lot frontage, planted either in standard tree beds or rain gardens. For lots with over 100 feet of frontage, tree beds must be connected if spacing is under 25 feet. If planting directly on-site is infeasible due to infrastructure or historic considerations, alternate compliance options include rain gardens, planters, off-site planting nearby, or a payment-in-lieu option to fund tree planting elsewhere. All plantings must follow standards from the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation or Department of Environmental Protection.
