Portland, Maine Heritage Tree Protection Ordinance

This Portland, Maine ordinance protects heritage trees—which include large trees and specific species of oaks and ornamental trees—on private property from removal and unnecessary pruning. Removing a heritage tree requires a permit and for the remover to a) replace trees with new ones on the same property or b) make a payment to the Tree Trust.
