San Francisco Better Streets Policy

The San Francisco Better Streets Plan, an official policy in the city and county of San Francisco, mandates that city streets be designed in keeping with best practices in environmental planning and pedestrian-oriented, multi-modal street design. The Better Streets policy includes a focus on filling public rights-of-way with generous landscaping, lighting, and greenery, providing habitat for urban wildlife, and increasing permeable surface area through GSI strategies.
