Savannah Landscape and Tree Protection Ordinance

This ordinance regulates and manages the forest areas of Savannah, aims to require tree planting and landscaping for environmental and aesthetic purposes, and prevents removal of trees without a permit, unless an exemption applies. The ordinance establishes a “tree quality points” system of analysis for trees- which “quantifies the relative value of trees that are planted or retained on a given site… to express the desirable qualities of the species and size for each tree..” (see: http://online.encodeplus.com/regs/savannah-ga/doc-viewer.aspx?tocid=001.004.008.014.007#secid-3574)

Tree Standard Details – The City of Savannah local government website provides standard details for tree planting, aimed at assisting permit applicants for construction. These standard details are available online via the city government website (https://www.savannahga.gov/924/Standard-Details-for-Park-Tree )

Related program: Urban Tree Nursery, an initiative operated by the Savannah Office of Sustainability. The project aims to create urban tree nurseries and green infrastructure pilot projects in city-owned lots and FEMA lots. (see: https://savannahga.gov/2953/Urban-Tree-Nursery )
